Aust, clamp on passports
PA Wellington Australians living in New Zealand will find it more difficult to obtain or renew passports from today. New Australian Government regulations come into effect on July 1 after the Stewart Royal Commission into drug trafficking. One of the report’s recommendations was to tighten controls on issuing passports. Mr lan Russell, vice-Con-sul at the Australian High Commission in Wellington, said that the new rules were designed to make it more difficult for people to obtain Australian passports by fraud.
Applicants must now supply a full birth certificate bearing both parents’
names, rather than the shortened copy which was previously acceptable. The new passport application forms also require counter-signing by a responsible person such as a magistrate, member of Parliament, senior police officer, doctor, or dentist. They must have known the applicant for at least 12 months. “We expect this will cause some difficulties, so we would like to give people warning,” said Mr Russell. Regulations will be tightened further next year. From July. 1984, applicants will need to be interviewed in person, which means that people in the South Island will have to travel to Wellington.
