Marsden Point meeting today
PA Auckland Union officials at the Marsden Point oil refinery extensions site will meet representatives of the Labour Department and the JV2 consortium in Whangarei today. The Labour Department’s chief construction safety engineer, Mr B. J. Amey, toured the construction site yesterday. Mr Amey, who talked to JV2 officials at the site, met union representatives in Whangarei on Wednesday. A safety dispute involving 1700 workers on the project began two weeks ago. The union’s concern about safety stems from an explosion and fire which injured four workers. Efforts in Auckland this
week to settle a strike by 33 engineers at the site have failed. The engineers, employed by a sub-contractor, Chicago Bridge and Iron, have been on strike since May 11.
However, the dispute has been overshadowed in recent weeks by the stoppage involving all 1700 workers on the project. Talks held earlier in the week before an industrial conciliator, Mr John Bufton, were adjourned without success. The strike, in protest against the dismissal of a union delegate, has forced the firm to suspend 49 other employees as work for them has run out. An Arbitration Court hearing on the dispute has been set for July 13.
