Telethon grants made ‘as soon as possible’
Grants from this year's Telethon will be made as soon as possible after applications for funds close on September 30, the secretary of the New Zealand Family Trust, the Rev. A. D. Robertson, has said. Two-thirds of the money collected would go to projects submitted through the major Christian socialservice agencies for work with families in need, children at risk, and old people, Mr Robertson said. The rest would be distributed to other voluntary organisations for family-related projects. The trust expects to distribute the money progressively over a two-year period and then wind up at the end of 1985. Mr Robertson said that the trustees were well aware that the need in the community was urgent. They would do all they could to return the money as quickly as possible. “The trustees will allocate money to meet the greatest social need, taking into account geographic and population spread,” he said. The total of $4 million which was reached at the close of Telethon last Sunday showed “marvellous support” for the trust’s aims, said Mr Robertson.
