Snowfall report

Fresh snowfalls this week have meant that most South Island ski-fields will be open by the week-end. The snow reports received from the New Zealand Snow Centre yesterday afternoon were:— Mount Hutt.—All facilities operating except upper T-bar; light southerly predicted until Saturday, chains required. Tekapo.—Base of 50cm; last fall 10cm June 29; powder on groomed base; all facilities operating; light southerly predicted; chains required.

Ohau.—Good base; opening Friday, July 8, subject to weather. Treble Cone.—Base of 130 cm; last fall June 29; excellent ski-ing on packed areas; all facilities operating; chains required.

Tasman Glacier.—Last fall June 29; heavy snow cover; ski plane operating subject to weather.

Harris Mountains HeliSki.—Base of 130 cm; last

fall 15cm June 29; surface powder; helicopter operating.

Mount Cook.—Cross-coun-try ski-ing available. Porter Heights.—All facilities operating; expect to open Saturday, July 2; chains required.

Broken River.—Base 130 cm; last fall 100 cm June 27 to 29; heavy snow; all facilities operating; opening Sunday, July 3; chains required.

Ben Ohau heli-ski.—Heli-copter operating; anticipate opening July 5. Mount Cheeseman.— Fresh snow on hard base; opening on Sunday; all facilities except ridge tow; chains essential.

The Martini Early Bird ski-ing races will be held at Mount Hutt over the weekend even though the upper T-bar there will still be out of action' A giant slalom will be raced tomorrow and an open slalom on Sunday with more than 100 competitors.
