Top squash players on show
New Zealand’s top squash players have only two weeks remaining to press claims for a place in the initial squad of five for the men’s world championships at Auckland and Hamilton in October. Most of them will be on show during the Wellington championships, the ninth qualifying event on the Adidas national circuit, this week-end. The most notable of the absentees are the full-time players, Ross Norman (Auckland) and Stuart Davenport (Wellington),
i both still overseas, but al- ) ready guaranteed places in s the national side after ; breaking into the world’s i elite top 10. 5 A late withdrawal from i the championships was the veteran of four previous i world teams’ events, Bruce i Brownlee (Auckland). i The convener of the - senior national selectors, Mr s Murray Isaacs, said from Ashburton yesterday that he ’ would be checking with j Brownlee over the weeki end. t A virtual certainty for the i, squad is Manurewa’s Rod
Hayes, the winner of both the North and South Island titles this year. Craig Blackwood (Auckland) is favoured to get the fourth position, but the fifth spot looks wide open. Canterbury’s top resident player, Paul Viggers, has pushed Hayes hard in three circuit tournaments, twice in finals, but needs a big win over one of the topranked players at Wellington this week-end to convince the selectors of his ability.
