A false start
Chainsaws rank alongside lawn mowers as the most frustrating machines to get started and keep going. Many of the reasons for non-function, however, can be easily diagnosed and remedied by the operator. Fuel problems are among the most common: either lack of it or the wrong mixture. The fuel tank may be empty, the filler cap
plugged up or the fuel line clogged. There may be water in the tank, or some other form of contamination, or the octane rating of the fuel may be too low. The fuel-oil ratio may not be correct or the petrol and oil may have separated. There may be an improper ratio of fuel to air, caused by faulty choke operation, the wrong car-
burettor settings or a dirty carburettor. The ignition system is often the cause of nonfunction. A faulty ignition switch, broken or damaged wires or loss of spark are common causes. Lubrication should also be checked: the chainsaw may have run out of oil, or have the wrong oil for that particular type.
