Farmers encouraged by higher calf prices
Better calf prices should be an encouragement for more farmers to run beef cattle, according to the president of the Canterbury Westland Murray Grey Breeders’ Club, Mr Warwick Power. In presenting his annual report recently, Mr Power said it was good to see good prices at this season’s calf sales, with average to good steer calves making to $2OO. “Not before time, and may it continue,” he said. Canterbury-Westland club members filled the first three placings in the junior bull section of the recent national Murray Grey sale, Mr Power reported. He congratulated Surrey Hills
station for taking the first two placings. In the sale six South Island bulls sold from $2OOO to $9OOO, with an average of $4BOO. For the annual general meeting of the club, members toured the North Canterbury properties of Mr Aubrey Cropp, Blythe Valley, Cheviot, Miss Kathleen Rutherford, Parnassus, Mr Lionel Wilkinson, Cheviot, and Mr Don Wyllie, Cheviot. Mr Power continues as president of the club, Mr Hamish Gardiner as vicepresident, Mrs Adrienne Wyllie as secretary/ treasurer and Mr Russell Brodie as publicity officer.
