Paul’s Gold appeals

Special correspondent Auckland Paul’s Gold would be preferred with much longer than six days since her last race but she has so much ability she should win again in the Rotorua Racing Club’s feature race today. This is the Radio Geyserland Bracelet, a 1400 m race for fillies and mares with special conditions which require class-one horses to carry 57kg, class two, 55 and so on down. Paul’s Gold is one of five class-one acceptors. The others are Decanka, Even Dollars, Penny Dee and Sweet Nell and, quite frankly, it is difficult to allow any below these much chance.

Decanka and Paul’s Gold are last-start winners at weight-for-age, Sweet Nell in a handicap. Old Even Dollars has 16 wins to her credit, one quite recently, and Penny Dee is on an exceptionally consistent run of form. Paul’s Gold’s success came over 1400 m at Tauranga and she won two starts before, in the Carbine Club Stakes at Ellerslie, failing in between times in a middle distance event. She seems best when a bit on the fresh side but no-one is more aware of this than the trainer, Lionel Ellis, so it must be assumed she has pleased him with the way she came through last Saturday’s race.

Decanka scored her win at Hawera nine days ago. She is good, but Paul’s Gold, gave her 2.5 kg and a beat-' ing in the Carbine Club Stakes and the other mare is the better in true winter footing. Penny Dee might be a slightly better prospect than Decanka. She usually runs well at Rotorua and at the last meeting on the course, on May 28, split Alley Oop and Beaufort Lass in an event similar to today’s. Decanka was fifth in that one.
