New show about antiques

A new six-part series, that may have viewers scuttling into their attics and basements by the thousands, begins on One this evening. “Antiques for Love or Money,” produced by John Wansbrough in Dunedin, looks at antiques and collectables brought in to the Dunedin Art Gallery by local viewers to be discussed, and in some cases

valued, by a panel of experts. These items range from a spittoon to a Rembrandt painting; and include figurines, furniture, silverware, jewellery, china, a Moorcroft vase, Daltonware, and old Victorian photographs. “We also discuss a special topic on each programme,” says Mr Wansbrough, “auctions, collectables, im-

porting, what is an antique? and so on.” The panel comprises Dougal Stevenson, himself a keen collector of Polynesian artefacts (he is said to be one of the most knowledgeable people in New Zealand on the subject); Cherry Raymond, Wayne Wright and Marshall Seifert. They do not always agree with each other’s opinions either, the

? producer says. He believes there must be hundreds of people around i who have no idea that they own valuable items. Two i such people are Television New Zealand employees, one of whom found a valuable painting underneath his house, and the other who was seen wearing a necki lace which she did not realise was valuable until it was : pointed out to her.
