Bethlehem short of cash

NZPA Toronto The city where Jesus Christ was born in a manger, according to the Bible, was about to go bankrupt, the Mayor of Bethlehem, Mr Elias Freij, said in Toronto yesterday. “We need $3 million immediately as a security deposit,” said Mr Freij, who is in Canada at the invitation of the Ministry of External Relations. Bethlehem, on the Israelioccupied West Bank, would soon be unable to pay for garbage collection. The roads were full of holes, and hospital services had become totally insufficient, he said. He attributed the city’s plight to Israel’s inflation of more than 120 per cent and Israeli regulations that were “financially suffocating” the city. He called on Christians in Canada and the United States to “aid the birthplace of our Saviour.”
