Refinery dispute talks

PA Auckland Union officials at the Marsden Point oil refinery extension site yesterday put to Labour Department officers their case in the safety dispute which has stopped work on the project. The officers will today listen to the arguments by representatives of the JV2 consortium.

The chairman of the union site committee, Mr W. T. Boyle, said last evening he expected that the industrial conciliator, Mr John Bufton, who held talks with the parties on Tuesday, would then convene another meeting. The 1700-strong workforce stopped work on June 16 after an explosion in the

site control office building injured four men. The unions want JV2 to set up some form of continuous gas monitoring on the site. However, the consortium says it can not agree that such a step, which is not seen as necessary by the Labour Department, would improve safety.
