Top schools win in chess
The top four schools in last year’s chess competition, sponsored by “The Press,” had comfortable wins in the firstround of the A grade tournament.
The defending champion, Christchurch B.H.S. A, had five wins and a half against St Bede’s, and the 1982 runner-up, Shirley A, had a similar result against St Andrew’s. Mairehau and Burnside also started on winning notes. First-round results: A grade.— Christchurch B.H.S. A 5%, Christ’s College A ¥2; Mairehau 4¥2, Cashmere 1%; Shirley B.H.S. A s¥a, St Andrew’s A %; Burnside 4%, St Bede’s 1%. B grade Zone I: Cashmere B 4, Shirley B.H.S. C 2; Christchurch B.H.S. B s¥a, St Andrew’s B ¥z; Christ’s College B 6, Hagley 0.
