Rule changes sought to do away with stewards
There will be an election for five stewards, from six candidates, of the Canterbury Jockey Club this year. But if a resolution gets approval at the annual meeting of members next week the club will not have stewards as from July of next year. A resolution, to be moved by Mr B. D. Kinley and seconded by Mr R. A. Young, seeks alterations to the club’s rules which will have the effect of merging
the committee and stewards, totalling 18, into one body, a committee of 16, which shall be elected each year by secret ballot. Such a committee at its first meeting would choose one of its members to be chairman, who shall be the president of the club, and one of its members to be treasurer.
Those seeking the changes claim that their proposals would make full and optimum use of the club’s management candidates “at
their most productive time.” If the proposed changes to the rules are passed Messrs Kinley and Young will seek support for a motion proposing that in each year after 1984 three members of the committee shall retire in alphabetical order, starting by ballot, but may offer themselves for re-election in the same year in which they retire. The club’s five stewards for 1983-84 will be elected from the following: R. D.
Dailey, J. W. Galvin, R. B. Johnson, A. C. Standston, R. Sutherland, and B. J. Vieceli.
Mr Russell Boyd has again been elected as honorary treasurer, and those elected to the committee are J. E. Austin, P. J. Cordner, J. B. Douglas-Clif-ford, J. A. G. Fulton, J. D. Gregan, G. E. J. Hutton, B. D. Kinley, J. M. Louisson, C. A. Macdonald, J. B. Prendergast, W. G. Quirk, and R. A. Young.
