New berthing service

Some shipping companies are taking advantage of being able to berth vessels in the inner harbour at Lyttelton during the hours of darkness. They have found that some ships can be turned round in a

day if the vessels are berthed early and ready for waterfront labour at 7 a.m. The livestock carrier Baupre Island, which called at port yesterday, was a vessel which used this extra berthing service offered by Lyttelton Harbour Board pilots. Previously, ships carrying fruit and bulk carriers have been the ones to arrive in the hours of darkness. Now that port lighting has been upgraded other vessels have found that an early arrival is most satisfactory. Pilots will berth ships in the inner harbour during the hours of darkness as long as the weather is suitable. • « • Members of the Christchurch branch of the Company of Master Mariners had their annual dinner recently, and a presentation was made to a new life member. The branch’s warden, Captain J. T. Owen, presented Captain R. D. Wallace, of Ashburton, with his certificate of life membership. Captain J. Twomey was congratulated on being elected deputy master of the New Zealand Company of Master Mariners. Meanwhile, Captain Owen and Captain J. Graham were the Christchurch delegates at the annual meeting of the Company of Master Mariners held at Auckland recently. At this meeting, Captain M. J. Kelly, well known as a master of China Navigation Company vessels which regularly visit Lyttelton and other New Zealand ports, was elected master.
