Chch clubs dominant

Christchurch teams only just failed to make a clean sweep of the titles at the national workingmen’s clubs indoor bowls tournament in Napier. The only championship which was not won by a Canterbury club was the pairs, in which Don Semple and Doug Spicer (Waihi) beat Noel Tomlinson and Ross McCutcheon (Hornby), 11-9, in the final. The Waihi pair scored five points on the last three ends to win the title.

McCutcheon, however, gained compensation by winning the singles event in rather remarkable circumstances. After seven ends McCutcheon was trailing Alan Tarrant, of Inglewood, 10-3. But McCutcheon prevented Tarrant from adding to his total and eventually won, 11-10, on a deciding end. John Graham, of Hoon Hay, achieved a triple distinction by claiming the tours and triples titles and earning the “player of the tournament” trophy. In the triples John Graham combined with Brian Eatwell and Bob Graham to beat the Hornby team of Frank Chapman, Don Marshall and Owen Bright, 16-5, in a one-sided final.

The Graham brothers, joined by F. Hadley and B. Tripney, had a 13-7 margin over M. Penfold, D. McAllister, G. McQuillan and L. Miller (Kaiapoi) in the fours final. The Aggregate Trophy was won by Hornby with Woolston a distant second.
