Victoria Square
Sir, — I make a plea to leave Victoria Street undisturbed. Sixty years ago I travelled daily to school along it, by tram. Now I go weekly on the Papanui bus and enjoy the trip back through Victoria Street. The Queen Victoria and Captain Cook statues should be left alone. Perhaps the Oxford Terrace bits could be closed off and grassed and a few more seats and flowers added. Victoria Street is an original arterial road going to Papanui Bush and north long before Market Square came into being. — Yours, etc., R. W. McLEAN. June 28, 1983.
Sir,—l question the advisability of truncating Victoria Street. It is an excellent access road and once gone will never be returned. The park could easily be improved without such drastic surgery. Could it be that the chief aim of the beautification exercise is, in fact, to do away with lower Victoria Street? Already Cambridge Terrace can barely cope with rushhour traffic. More traffic diversion means more delay, pollution, right hand turns and less safety. — Yours, etc., R. LEWIS. June 28, 1983.
