Scottish trio
The McCalmans are a trio of Edinburgh-born musicians who have performed together for the last 11 years. After some line-up changes the group now includes lan McCalman, who plays the guitar and weirdolin (a custom-built hybrid of an old English guitar and lute), Derek Moffat, who plays guitar, mandolin and bodhran and Nick Keir, who plays guitar, mandolin and whistle. The group draws its
music from folk songs of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and has a repertoire of 300 songs. The trio has recorded many times and future plans include a television series and concerts abroad. The members collect and re-arrange most of their material. The McCalmans will perform in Christchurch as part of an Australasian tour, on July 3 in the centre gallery in the Arts Centre.
