Midwinter Razzle dazzles

Three different concerts with an international flavour will be held in the Arts Centre tomorrow as part of the Midwinter Razzle. At midday tomorrow there will be a concert of ethnic and folk music that will include items from American, French, Brazilian and Chilean sources. At 1 p.m. the Cantabile Singers will perform light classical and choral works from Europe and North America. Their programme will feature works by Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Saint-Saens, as well as Negro spirituals and lighter comic numbers. Local groups will present a Polynesian concert, with dance and music from Rarotonga, Samoa and New Zealand, at 8 p.m. All three concerts will be held in the Centre Gallery. Several events have also been organised for today. There will be a lunch-time performance of the macabre play “George” by C. G.

Bond, followed by readings of short plays by Tennessee Williams and David Crompton. It will be held in the Clocktower theatrette. At 1 p.m. today members from “Beyond a Joke” will hold a free “Songs for Peace” concert in the Centre Gallery. This evening there will be a late night comedy show in the Arts Centre coffee house, featuring skits, improvisational theatre and comic poems. Clown and dance workshops will be held all day on Thursday and Friday, culminating in a performance on Friday evening. Another event on Friday will be a concert by “Threepenny Folly,” at 1 p.m. The final Midwinter Razzle event held at the Arts Centre will be the Pioneer Romp in the Great Hall on Saturday evening. It will be a costume barndance with three bands and other entertainers.
