Liquor advertising

Sir,—l wish to register my violent protest over liquor advertisements of the “Superman” variety, at present being shown on TV. This individual makes the claim that (evidently) through lower liquor prices, the nation will be saved. This is nauseous in the extreme, especially to those who are suffering deeply through alcoholism, and to families who are suffering from the effects of it. Statistics reveal that 9 per cent of the drinking population become alcoholic. We do not need statistics regarding the carnage on tjje road, through drunken drivers. *get th|s

advertisement says that the people will be saved. These iniquitous advertisements are allowed to continue without a word of protest. Well, sir, I do!—Yours, etc., (Mrs) B. WOODFIELD. June 20, 1983. Sir,—l write to express my concern and disgust at the message a certain liquor advertisement conveys to the public (especially the young), where it is stated that by selling cheap liquor they (presumably the liquor interests in our country) will “save the people.” As a Christian and a believer of God’s word, I object most strongly, as it is stated in the Bible that God and only God can save the world. What are the Christians in our community doing about this type of misleading advertising? Surely the people who have had loved ones killed and/or maimed through the abuse of alcohol would not be deceived into believing this message. Let us not sit meekly and accept this TV advertising. — Yours, etc., C. E. McCAUGHAN, Darfield. June 22, 1983.
