Radio contract signed
PA Wellington A $lO million contract to supply digital microwave radio equipment to the Post Office has been awarded to Fujitsu, Ltd, of Japan. The contract has been signed in Wellington by the
Postmaster-General, Mr Talbot, the Post Office Deputy Director-General, Mr D. R. Murphy, and the director of Fujitsu, Mr M. Ogi. Under the three-year contract, Fujitsu will supply New Zealand requirements for a new trunk and junc-
tion microwave network. Mr Talbot said that Digital systems provided a better quality of telephone connection than the existing analogue microwave system. Until now all microwave links in New Zealand have been analogue, designed primarily for the -transmission of telephone signals. An increasing amount of information, including com-puter-to-computer traffic, is now transferred in digital form, and more telephone signals are now taking this form. A new microwave route between Hamilton and Palmerston North will be the first application of the new equipment. It is due to be commissioned late next year.
