Woman dies of flu complications

A woman, aged 18, has died at Christchurch Hospital of Influenza complications. The woman, a University of Canterbury student, was admitted last week with pneumonia after a bout of flu. She died on Sun- day. The hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr D. A. Andrews, said that one or two deaths often occurred during a flu epidemic. Elderly people were more susceptible but this time the virus, identified earlier as a strain of the Russian flu, had affected mainly young people. jiNo other patients*, had

been admitted to the hospital as a result of influenza, he said. Flu had also affected staff at Christchurch Hospital but the situation was starting to improve. At one stage last week, up to 70 nurses were away from work. Others, particularly part-time staff, had carried the extra workload. More than 40 nurses were off sick from Princess Margaret Hospital yesterday, most with flu. The hospital’s principal nurse, Miss P. E. Caukwell, said absenteeism was at its highest level for some time but staff were coping.
