Ferry dispute settled
The Lyttelton port dispute involving the inter-island freight ferry Spirit of Free Enterprise has been settled. A Harbour Board worker should be stationed at the No. 7 wharf when the Spirit of Free Enterprise works there, the Port Conciliation Committee has decided. The worker will drive any Harbour Board equipment which may be needed on the ferry’s cargo operations. The ferry missed two sailings last week after Harbour Board workers took industrial action for a claim that they should be involved in its cargo workings. “We are not completely happy with the decision, but the matter has been through the right disputes procedure and a decision has come from it,” said the board’s industrial relations officer, Mr Phil Taylor. The secretary of the Harbour Board Employees’ Union, Mr Paul Monk, said yesterday the union was happy with the decision. The Spirit of Free Enterprise left Lyttelton for Wellington yesterday afternoon having missed two sailings because of an electrical problem.
