St Bede’s wins rugby

A command performance in the opening quarter by the St Bede’s College forwards formed the basis for their team’s 14-4 victory against Christ’s College in their first XV’s rugby match at Lancaster Park yesterday. St Bede’s had 10 points within six minutes, almost before Christ’s College was aware of what was happening. Certainly the Christ’s College pack had not warmed to the task. The rest of the match, however, was very even, Christ’s College closing the gap to 10-4 after 15min of

the second half. Christ’s, with the wind behind it, made some adventurous back-line attacks as the game progressed, Jonathon Gurnsey adding impetus from full-back. The St Bede’s defence held firm and the team settled the issue when Peter Davidson, a determined right wing, barged over in the closing minutes. For St Bede’s Luke Thoms, Jeremy Smith and Peter Davidson- scored tries; Terrence Clemens adding one conversion. Michael Bell scored a try for Christ’s College.
