‘Sea Sunday’ at port

A colourful church service and a procession through the streets of Lyttelton will be the features of “sea Sunday,” to be celebrated at port on Sunday. These activities are the result of a decision made by the Christchurch Anglican Synod last year, when it declared that July, 1983, should be “sea month.” The programme will begin on Sunday with special activities designed to focus attention on sea life and those involved with nautical activities. The day will begin with a thanksgiving service in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Winchester Street, at 10.30 a.m. The flags of the armed services, commercial shipping lines, and pleasure craft organisations will be presented during the service. At 11.15 a.m., the band of the 2nd Canterbury Regiment will lead a procession from the church to No. 2 East Wharf. Representatives of the armed services, church and civic organisations, as well as people involved in the shipping industry will be among those marching. The Anglican Bishop of Christchurch, the Rt Rev. Alan Pyatt, will bless a fleet of naval, commercial, fishing and pleasure craft from the wharf. After that, the band will provide entertainment and refreshments will be served. A tug will be open for inspection and pilot cutters will run short harbour cruises. The Timeball Station and Lyttelton Museum will be open from 12.30 p.m. According to the warden of Holy Trinity Church, Mr John Harrison, this will be the biggest celebration of “sea Sunday” yet organised.
