New S.I.S. head

Sir,—Susan Taylor’s letter (June 20) seems to be rather one-eyed. Propaganda emanates from many sources, not just the American Administration. To paint a picture of a saintly Viet Cong rings a little hollow in hindsight. The Soviets now have a major naval base at Cam Ranh Bay; the Vietnamese have invaded Kampuchea, and tens of thousands of boat people were not out there for the fishing. I suggest Ms Taylor reads the article (“The Press,” March 8,1983), “Giap comes clean” reprinted from the “Economist.” It looks at the myths propagated about the Viet Cong during the war. More recently, the comments of the late Dr J. W. Ardagh are significant re Viet Cong atrocities. He said that only American atrocities were considered newsworthy by the media. Hopefully John Smith, DirectorDesignate of the 5.1.5., is awake to all attempts to subvert our proper freedoms, whatever direction the threat comes from. — Yours, etc., J. LANE. June 24, 1983.
