Use of power
Sir,—“Stoves use most power” is a headline (“The Press,” June 21) based on Paterson and Earl’s research at Massey, taxpayerfunded similar to research at Auckland University. Does it need thousands of dollars of research grants paid by taxpayers to determine that a frypan or crockpot is more economical than the versatile electric range? For three years the Standards Association, the Cawthron Institute and possibly others, have also been given substantial grants to research “energy labelling.” The Minister knows that energy labelling has been proved in America and elsewhere to be coun-ter-productive, but allows his department to act with largesse and wastefulness. For these reasons, manufacturers are reluctant to cooperate with the Minister, or help legitimise the waste of public funds. — Yours, etc., G. W.
