Liquor advertising

Sir,—lt is time we stopped pussyfooting. Beside the sad story of a manslaughter and the role of alcohol in it, you have placed a large advertisement for an alcohol outlet. Alcohol is the waster and wrecker of countless lives and families, is a catalyst of crime, is a deceiver which promises pleasure and peace but which instead brings tyranny and torment. It causes up to 50 per cent of our road toll, turns vigorous young people into “sickness beneficiaries,” and saps the human and material resources of all nations. The vested interests who promote it use glamour or humour in their advertisements, but they never, no never, show photos of those besotted or ruined by it. Alcohol and its advertising are deception industries.—Yours, etc., D. I. STEDMAN. June 24, 1983.
