Canty poets win prizes

Poems by five young Canterbury poets caught the eye of the judges in the “Pen-a-poem” contest run by “Fact” magazine. Results of the contest, which attracted about 1000 entries, were announced last week. Victoria Krauss, aged 11, of Woodend School, North Canterbury took first place in the 11-14 years age group with her poem, “Mother Earth.” In the 15-19 years section, Katherine Quigley, aged 17, a pupil at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School in Christchurch, took

second place with an entry entitled “For Ben.” Helen Young, also aged 17, from Burnside High School, won a special mention in the same category with a poem called “A Living Death.” “Flames of Warmth” won Jenny Wilson, aged 10, of Woodend School, third place in the under-11 years section. Rochelle Bishop, aged nine, of Hinds School in Mid-Canterbury, won a special mention in this section with her entry, “Bears Bears Bears.” The winners will receive either a book or a book
