Indian floods claim 500
NZPA-Reuter New Delhi At least 500 villagers are now feared to have died and thousands still marooned after heavy floods which swept across part of the west Indian state of Gujarat last week. It was the second big natural disaster to hit the state within eight months. A cyclone killed more than 500 people in coastal districts last November, and officials said that the death toll this time could be higher. The Gujarat Home Minister, Mr Prabodh Rai, said that at least 300 bodies had been recovered so far, and another 200 people were missing, feared dead. Air Force helicopters were dropping relief supplies to thousands of villagers marooned by the flood waters. The Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, announced that she would fly over affected areas of the peanut and cotton growing state on an£. inspection tour.
