Record entries for science fair
A record number of exhibits will be on show when the 1983 Canterbury-West-land Science Fair opens to the public tomorrow. School pupils from Form 1 to Form 7 have prepared displays, working models, posters, and essays for the fair, which is held annually at the Horticultural Hall in Cambridge Terrace. Initially 450 exhibits were entered, but because this number was too large schools were asked to reduce the number of entries, said the chairman of the fair’s organising committee, Mr J. A. Houliston. The fair now had a record 315 exhibits from about 530 school pupils, Mr Houliston said.
Although the fair is open to children throughout Canterbury and Westland, all the entries this year are from schools in Christchurch and surrounding districts. Mr Houliston said the fair had “just got bigger and bigger” each year. The fair will be officially opened by the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, this morning. Judging will be done later in the day. The fair will be open to the public tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday. Four entries will be selected to go forward to the National Science Fair, to be held at the Christchurch Town Hall in October.
