Waiwera rate rise

Waiwera County ratepayers can expect an increase of about 5 per cent in their rates next year. The Waiwera County Council last evening adopted estimates for 198384 which included a rate increase of 5.16 per cent. Councillors were told that the increase was needed to meet expense of payments. Among these were the maintenence of roads,

bridges, council houses, and salaries. The council’s total expenditure for the year is $353,815. The total revenue was $176,575, leaving a deficit of $177,240 to be met by rdtes The County Clerk, Mr W. F. Aydon, said that to meet the rates figure required a rate of 0.33828 a cent in the dollar, on a capital valuation of the county, had to be

set. The net capital valuation figure was $52,393,300. Mr Aydon told councillors that it should be noted that the rates increase was an over-all increase, and would vary individually according to the variation between property revaluations. The estimates will be confirmed at the next meeting of the council in August, if a special meeting is not called before then.
