Road closed at Paddys Bend

A fall of rock and earth yesterday again closed the slip-plagued stretch of the Arthur’s Pass highway at Paddys Bend, between Cass and Bealey. Traffic was turned back from 2.30 p.m. Ministry of Works and Development staff toiled late into the night to clear the slip, but the road was not expected to be opened before 8 a.m. today. The instability of the steep faces above State highway 73 at Paddys Bend resulted in the road’s being closed several times last October. On one occasion an estim-

ated 1500 cubic metres of loose rock crashed down from the Waimakariri River bluffs, piling deep across the highway. On another occasion motorists had to run a gauntlet of falling rubble. Very strong westerly winds swept State highway 7 on the Lewis Pass yesterday, and the Automobile Association (Canterbury) urged drivers, especially those towing caravans or driving big vehicles, to take extreme care. The winds had dropped by last evening, and all main roads except State highway 73 were open.
