Southern Cross in new hands
A former Christchurch man well known in the tourist industry, Mr Don Mundell, has formed a partnership to take over a favourite haunt of New Zealanders visiting Suva. Mr Mundell, formerly chairman of the Tourist Corporation of Fiji, and his partner, Mr Azeem Mohammed, have big plans for the Southern Cross
Hotel, which is situated close to the heart of the capital. “Since we took over in March we have been busy
upgrading the facilities and creating a new image for this little darling of a hotel,” said Mr Mundell. The Southern Cross has
only 35 rooms, each complete with private bathroom, refrigerator, tea and coffee-making facilities. The restaurant is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and meals may be served at the poolside or to the room if requested. The hotel has just introduced buffet luncheons offering Fijian, Indian, Chinese and European dishes for $F4.50 (?NZ6.75) per person. Lively evening entertainment, including a two-hour “happy hour,” is another feature of the hotel. The Southern Cross is also offering New Zealanders a special dollar-for-dollar deal for a limited period which means a saving of up to 50 per cent on current exchange rates.
