Holiday packages contain savings

Fiji's long list of hotels and motels offers visitors comfortable accommodation ranging from modest rooms at budget prices to the luxury of international standards at the more expensive resort hotels. Travel agents have a good selection of package deals which include air fares, transfers, and accommodation at much lower tariffs than the “rack rates” quoted in the adjacent column. Furthermore, Air NewZealand and Air Pacific are expected to announce shortly a special low-fare deal for South Islanders which should trim the cost of Fiji’s packaged holidays closer to those prices paid by Aucklanders. Most hotel rooms in Fiji are air-conditioned, but some — particularly bure-

style rooms — are cooled by fans. Many hotels and motels also provide refrigerators and tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. Food can be expensive in some of the higher-priced hotels. For instance, a buffet dinner at Pacific Harbour’s Beachcomber Hotel cost $F17.50 (SNZ26) a head. A fair guide to prices is given by the management of the Toberua — they offer a total meal plan of 5F30 (?NZ4S) a day. Meals at more modest hotels like Suva’s Southern Cross range from JF4.85 (SNZ7.2O) for a cooked breakfast and about SFI2 (SNZIB) for dinner. Travellers at resort hotels can save considerable expense by buying food for mid-day snacks and drinks at supermarkets.
