Squash teams chosen

Burnside’s Michael Allred was a surprise winner of the Canterbury junior boys’ closed squash selection tournament at his home club courts at the week-end. Allred, seeded fourth, upset the top seed, Blair Michelson (Sumner), in straight games in the semi-finals and then beat the No. 2 seed, Geoffrey Cotton (Christchurch), in the final. At the end of the tournament the Canterbury junior selectors, Messrs Lindsay Cotton and Bruce Marriott and Mrs Fay Harley, named the teams for the New Zealand junior open and inter-district teams’ event at Auckland from August 19 to 28. The teams, in alphabetical order, are: Boys: Michael Allred (Burn-

side), Geoffrey Cotton (Christchurch), Michael Harley (Linwood), Blair Michelson (Sumner), Steven Wren (Sumner). Girls: Christine Conaghan (Burnside), Sheryl Havill, Vicki Hillman (both West Coast), Justine Marriott (Sumner), Susan Wasley (Burnside). The team managers will be Mr Jim Crosbie and Mrs Nancy Wasley. The tournament resulted:— Semi-finals: M.Allred (Burnside) beat B. Michelson (Sumner), 10-8, 9-4, 9-4; G. Cotton (Christchurch) beat M. Harley (Linwood), 10-8, 9-8, 9-6. Final: Allred beat Cotton, 39, 10-9, 9-3, 7-9, 9-0. Play-off for third: Michelson beat Harley, 8-9, 4-9, 9-0, 10-8, 9-3.
