Rally lead shifts

The world rally champion, Walter Rohri, pegged back four seconds on Michele Mouton’s lead when he won special stage 16 of the Sanyo Rally south of Gisborne late last evening. However, the aggressive Frenchwoman struck back on the very next stage. Mouton edged out her Audi team-mate, Hannu Mikkola, by eight seconds, and took another 17 seconds off Rohri, as the crews settled into the night-time stages. Mikkola moved into fifth place over all with his second placing on the stage, and he was only Imin 10s behind Rohrl’s Lancia teammate, Atillio Bettega. However, the top Nissan driver, Timo Salonen, was secure in third place, 13min ahead of Bettega. Positions after special stage 17 near Wairoa were: Mouton, 5:43:36, 1; Rorhl, 5:47:2, 2; Salonen, 5:53:35, 3; Bettega, 6:6:9, 4; Mikkola, 6:7:19, 5; Mehta, 6:9:2, 6; Reg Cook, 6:15:46, 7; Jim Donald, 6:17:52, 8; Malcolm Stewart, 6:22:16, 9.
