Doctor fined for selling condoms
NZPA Dublin An Irish doctor has been fined £4OO ($932) for having sold a pack of 10 prophylactics to a patient in defiance of Ireland’s strict laws on contraceptives. A law allows only a small number of pharmacists to sell contraceptives to clients, and only if they can produce a doctor’s prescription. Ireland is 90 per cent
Catholic, and abortions are banned. The doctor who was fined, of Clane, County Kildare, said that the law had defied his medical convictions. “As a doctor, my first duty is to my patients,” he said. “It is my duty as a doctor to prevent unwanted pregnancies and stop the spread of venereal disease. I will go to jail if necessary.” He will appeal.
