Call to abandon outfall
PA Wellington The Environment and Conservation Organisations of New Zealand have called on the Government and the Taranaki Catchment Commission to abandon plans to retain the Motunui outfall. They should accept the New Plymouth City Council offer of use of its new landbased system to treat all urban and industrial waste from north Taranaki, said the E.C.O. executive committee chairman, Mr Roger Morris.
Mr Morris said that the Waitangi Tribunal’s recommendations about treatment of effluent from the synthetic fuels plant at Motunui should be implemented fully. Land-based x treatment was the best solution, Mr Morris said. “We are therefore disturbed to find that both the Government and the Catchment Commission favour a deep sea outfall. The commission has even said it prefers Motunui to Waitara as a site for a regional outfall,” he said.
