Liberal call not licence to debauch — Mr Talbot
PA Auckland The Minister of Tourism, Mr Talbot, has defended his call for Sunday trading, casinos, and more liberal licensing laws, saying he did not advocate an era of debauchery and licentiousness. Opening the National Travel Association convention yesterday morning, Mr Talbot said that during the last week he had tried to encourage public debate on these issues but has been misunderstood. “I would like to think we might develop along lines which are compatible with the views of a majority of New Zealanders,” he said. “Individually, more liberal licensing laws, casinos and Sunday trading will not necessarily encourage more visitors, but collectively, they could have considerable impact.” Mr Talbot said his critics tended to look separately at each issue. He was trying to encourage people to look at the total scene.
