Flooding in Queenstown

PA Invercargill Heavy rain in Central Otago caused flooding in Queenstown yesterday and closed the Kawarau Gorge, the main access route to the tourist centre. Households in Queenstown were warned of flooding. A sewer burst, spewing raw sewage into the streets. Sandbags were stacked at

the corners of some streets as residents made efforts to keep the water at bay. Trucks and front-end loaders moved silt and debris, and an onlooker said silt in one area was piled more than a metre high. ■The road from Queenstown to Frankton had to be cleared of silt. Slips closed the main road to Cromwell through the Kawarau Gorge.
