General forecast: An active cold front is expected to lie over the northern South Island in the morning and move over the North Island in the afternoon. It is preceded by a strong northerly flow and a band of rain, but falls east of the main ranges should be only scattered and light. A cold westerly flow follows the front, with clearing skies in eastern districts and scattered showers in the west. There should be some hail and thunder in the west of the South Island. District forecast: Canterbury: North-wester-

lies, strong in many inland places, reaching the coast at times; rain about the Alps, with isolated thunderstorms, and a few falls spreading further east for a time. Nelson, Marlborough: Rain at first, with strong northerlies; winds turning to fresh westerlies and becoming fine, apart from showers in the western ranges. Buller, Westland: Rain easing to showers, and some hail and thunder. Tomorrow: Mainly fine in Canterbury; showers in other areas.
