Bad accident leaves motorcyclist in coma
NZPA Assen, The Netherlands The Dutch motorcycling grand prix, won by Kenny Roberts, of the United States, was marred by a serious accident in which the reigning world champion, Franco Uncini, of Italy, suffered severe head and facial injuries. The accident, which left Uncini seriously injured, happened as early as the second lap, when he fell from his machine, but was apparently unhurt. As he tried to crawl from the track to safety, he was stuck by a bike ridden by Wayne Gardner, of Aus-
tralia, making his world championship debut, and estimated to be travelling at almost 200km/h. While all the other bikes passed Uncini on the righthand side of the track, Gardner tried to pass him on the left and they collided, the impact knocking Uncini’s crash helmet off and causing serious head injuries. Uncini, who as president of the professional riders’ organisation has repeatedly called for greater safety precautions at tracks, was later reported to be in a coma in the neurological unit of the university hospital in Groningen.
