Shipping news Cattle shipment this week

Port watchers will see a rare sight when more than 1400 Hereford heifers are loaded on a ship expected to call at Lyttelton this week. The Baupre Island, a 6384ton vessel built in 1953, is a specialist livestock carrier. She will be home for 2300 Hereford heifers during an 18day voyage to South Korea. An Australian livestock exporter, Mr Gordon Mac Nicol, negotiated the contract which is said to be worth more than $600,000 to New Zealand Hereford breeders. Dalgety New Zealand, Ltd, is co-ordinating the buying and collection of the cattle for Mac Nicol Live Exports (Aust.), Ltd, but several New Zealand stock firms have been involved.

The Baupre Island, owned by the Hong Kong Baupre Shipping Co., Ltd, is due at port from Brisbane on Wednesday. After loading at Lyttelton, she will sail for Tauranga to pick up the rest of the heifer shipment and then on to South Korea. Livestock carriers seldom call at Lyttelton, although they are more common at some North Island ports. The last shipment of livestock to leave Lyttelton was in April, 1979, when 21,000 live sheep were loaded aboard the 10,435-ton Sinaia. She was bound for Rumania.
