Big wins in badminton

Hagley I and Railway set up an Interesting finale to the A grade club badminton competition with big wins in the first round of section play at the Skellerup Hall on Saturday. Hagley defeated a depleted South Brighton I side. 8-0. while Railway accounted for Bryndwr I. 7-1. Flu had made deep inroads into the usual South Brighton I line-up. to such an extent that only one of its regular players. Rowan Adam, appeared. South Brighton failed to win a single set in the contest, but Bryndwr I went a little better. Its' No. 2 women's singles player. Paula Thorpe, beat her opponent. Rosey Stanton, a Division One provincial representative. in three sets. The win gives Miss Thorpe a 50 per cent success rate in A grade matches this winter. When the two met earlier this season. Miss Thorpe won the first set, before dropping the second and third. On this occasion. having lost the opening set. she battled back to win the next two over her more experienced opponent Christchurch has had a remarkable season. Having lost its first four contests, it has won every round since. On Saturday it crushed Bryndwr n. 8-0. conceding three sets. Ironically, all three sets it lost were the first — Andrew Duckmanton conceded the first before beating Mark Reid; Duckmanton and John Fletcher dropped the first in setting to Reid and his brother David; and Duckmanton combined with his mother.
