Cup win delights Indians
NZPA-Reuter New Delhi India’s President, Mr Zail Singh, and Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, have expressed the delight of millions of Indians by sending messages of congratulation to India’s triumphant World Cup cricket team. Against all odds, India beat the West Indies by 43 runs in a dramatic final of the World Cup cricket championships at Lord’s in London. Indian newspapers jubilantly splashed the news across their front pages. “Caribbean giants tamed at Lord’s” was how the “Hindustan Times” put it. “West Indian pride humbled,” said the “Patriot.” Mr Singh said in a message to the Indian captain, Kapil Dev, that it was “a magnificent victory, and by winning the world championship we are all proud of you.” In a separate congratulatory message Mrs Gandhi said, “My slogan is ‘lndia can do it.’ Thank you for living up to it.” Indian cricket fans were glued to television and radio sets as it became apparent that India could pull off a victory. Fireworks were let off in several parts of the capital as Indians celebrated the fall of the final West Indies wicket. Match report, back page.
