Meat, wool boost trade
PA Wellington Heavy meat and wool exports as the season peaks have boosted trade statistics further for May and April this year. Provisional trade figures for May, 1983, show an excess of exports over imports of $53.2 million. A year earlier exports for the month exceeded imports by $52.3M. May, 1983, figures are: exports valued at $746.4M. Imports valued at $693.2M (May, 1982, figures were: exports valued at $729.6M and imports at $677.3M). Exports for April, 1983, were $50.3M ahead of imports, at $574.8M for exports versus $424.5M for imports. In the year to April, exports totalled $6,195.1M, an increase of 15.6 per cent over the previous year.
Imports for the same period were up 3.1 per cent to $6,056.9M, in spite of the heavy decline for the month. The figures for April were boosted by the lack of crude oil imports during that month, and lower motor vehicle imports. Venezuela appeared on the statistics for the first time in this trade year to April, with automotive diesel imports of $15.3M. The export tables for April show significant movement in wool export tonnages — 29,000 tonnes worth S93M. Increased meat and butter shipments also account for the improved year-to-date values of exports. Meat exports in the 10 months to April were $211.5M and butter, $110.2M.
