Possible closing of Wainui school
The Wainui school on Banks Peninsula will probably close at the end of the year. A falling roll has meant that the number of pupils will fall below nine, the number required to keep the primer one to form 2 school open. Representatives of the Canterbury Education Board met parents and residents during the week to discuss the possible closing of the school. The general manager of the Canterbury Education
Board, Mr David Wilson, said a sole charge school such as Wainui needed at least nine pupils and at the beginning of next year there would not be enough children. “The present teacher is due to leave at the end of the term and he has some children at the school,” Mr Wilson said. Unless a large family arrives in the area before the end of the Christmas holidays, the Wainui pupils will have to travel to the school at Duvauchelle.
