Successful drop at McMurdo

This United States Air Force tanker aircraft swooped briefly into view at Christchurch Airport yesterday, on a return trip to Auckland from McMurdo Base. The KCIO, a military version of the DCIO, was used to refuel a Starlifter during its second midwinter drop at McMurdo Station yesterday. Bad weather had pre-

vented the mission from being completed on Thursday as scheduled. Drops were made on Tuesday evening at McMurdo Station and at the South Pole Station. The Starlifter left Christchurch at 6.30 a.m. yesterday and arrived back at 5 p.m. after what was described as a successful mission.

Eighty bundles of cargo, the biggest used in an airdrop, was off-loaded in about 12 seconds, according to the United States Air Force Christchurch detachment commander, Major W. H. Dudley. The supplies, weighing 20,638 kg, were mostly repair parts, but 16 boxes of produce were also included. According to crew mem-

bers, the weather was excellent and visibility was clear. The fuel transfer took place just north of McMurdo Station on the way down, and again in about the same place on the way back. The KCIO returned to Auckland. This is the first year that two separate winter supply flights have been made.
