Engineers protest
Engineering workers in 13 Canterbury factories went on strike on Thursday for the day in protest against the wage freeze. The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Engineers’ Union, Mr R. J. Todd, said yesterday that the workers at each of the sites had voted by secret ballot to strike for the day, which coincided with the anniversary of the implementation of the freeze. The union has also placed
an advertisement in today’s edition of “The Press,” signed by Mr Todd, Mr J. Chirnside, the branch president, and members of the union in about 70 factories and workshops in Canterbury. The union members express their objection to the Government’s extension of the wage freeze to February 29. “Not only will this exacerbate the inequities the freeze has created, but it
will increase the intolerable burden already imposed by the freeze upon the lower paid workers,” says the advertisement. The members said that they would make their opposition to the Government’s policies “abundantly clear” when they next had an opportunity at the ballot box. Workers at the Crown Crystal glass factory in Hornby have voted to work to rule on the 23rd of each month.
