Official report and prices

Prices for crossbred secondshear ranged from firm to sellers’ favour at the Christchurch wool sale yesterday, compared with the Auckland sale on Thursday, according to the official report. The report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Woolbuyers’ Association and the Wool Board, said the sale for crossbred lambs’ wool was firm compared with Auckland. The best style crossbred oddments were from 5 to 7.5 per cent dearer and poor style oddments were generally unchanged. The offering of 14,520 bales from growers and 5810 bales on behalf of the Wool Board consisted of a mixed selection of pre-lamb shorn fleece, second-shear, lambs wool and crutchings. The fleece lacked good length but many lots were high yielding and attractive for colour, applying equally to fine wool and crossbred. Second-shear showed up well for yield and colour but length was varied. The crutchings were mainly short and not a true indication of supplies to come later. Competition was well spread, the main buyers being Eastern Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and New Zealand mills. Compared with the Dunedin sale on May 27, fine Halfbred wool was in sellers’ favour, medium and strong Halfbred in buyers’ favour, and extra strong Halfbred firm. Medium and strong crossbreds were 5 per cent dearer compared with the Wellington sale on June 10. The Wool Board gave limited support to the sale, bidding on about 2.5 per cent of the offering and having about 0.3 per cent sold or passed to it. Prompt date for the sale is July 12. The following is the official range of prices which includes the Wool Board supplement,
